Plan your stay in Reggio Calabria, home to the Bronzi di Riace and 3 km from Sicily across the Strait of Messina. Find hotels and travel tips.
Reggio Calabria sits at the toe of Italy's boot, separated from Sicily by just 3 kilometres of the Strait of Messina. Founded by Greek colonists around 720 BC as Rhégion, it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Western world. The seafront Lungomare Falcomatà — ranked among Italy's most scenic promenades — stretches for nearly 2 kilometres along the strait, offering direct views of Mount Etna on clear days. The city sits in Calabria's southernmost province and connects to Villa San Giovanni by frequent ferry crossings to Messina.
The Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia draws visitors from across Europe. It holds the Bronzi di Riace — two full-size Greek bronze warriors recovered from the seabed in 1972 — widely considered among the finest surviving examples of ancient Greek sculpture. Art historians, archaeology students, and cultural tourists make the museum a primary destination. Beyond the bronzes, the city offers Aragonese-era fortifications, a Norman cathedral rebuilt after the 1908 earthquake, and a working bergamot industry — Reggio produces roughly 80% of the world's bergamot, the citrus that flavours Earl Grey tea.
Reggio Calabria is served by Aeroporto dello Stretto (REG), located 4 kilometres south of the city centre. Train services connect the city to Naples and Rome via the coastal line. The city operates on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 in summer). Average July temperatures reach 30 °C; January averages 12 °C.
