Rende sits in the Crati Valley of Calabria, 8 km north of Cosenza in southern Italy. The city expanded rapidly after 1972, when the University of Calabria (UniCal) opened its residential campus across the surrounding hills. UniCal now enrolls around 35,000 students and ranks among Italy's largest campus universities. Its elevated pedestrian walkway, designed in part by Gregotti Associati, links faculty buildings along a single continuous spine — an architectural reference point in postwar Italian university planning.

Most visitors are academics, researchers, and families of students, alongside business travelers serving the commercial corridor along Via delle Nazioni. Above the modern city, Rende's medieval centro storico occupies a narrow ridge and preserves the Castello Normanno-Svevo, a Norman-era fortress later modified under Swabian rule, alongside 16th-century churches and tight stone lanes. The contrast between the hilltop quarter and the university town below defines Rende's character more than any single monument.

Local buses connect Rende to central Cosenza in under 20 minutes. The nearest commercial airport is Lamezia Terme (SUF), approximately 60 km south, with scheduled services from Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa, and several northern European hubs.
