About Catanzaro
Catanzaro: Calabria's Hilltop Capital Above Two Seas
Catanzaro sits at roughly 320 metres above sea level on a ridge between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts, earning its nickname città tra i due mari. Founded under Byzantine rule and later a Norman stronghold, the city retains its medieval street pattern in the Quartiere Greco and the ruins of the Norman castle overlooking the Fiumarella valley. The 19th-century Ponte Bisantis — a 110-metre arch viaduct — is the most photographed structure in the city and frames the deep ravine that divides the old town from the modern districts.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate along Corso Mazzini and in the newer Catanzaro Lido district on the Ionian coast, roughly 14 km east. Lido hotels appeal to summer visitors seeking direct beach access; centre hotels suit those exploring the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia di Catanzaro, which holds Greek and Italic artefacts from Calabrian excavations. Rail connections run from Catanzaro Lido station to Reggio Calabria (approx. 1 h 30 min) and north to Cosenza.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The city centre is hilly; use the urban funicular linking lower Sala district to upper Centro — one of few still operating in southern Italy.
- Best season: April–June and September avoid summer heat; temperatures reach 34 °C in August.
- Silk heritage: Catanzaro was medieval Europe's leading silk producer; the Galleria del Mese arcade displays local craft workshops.
