About Saint-Oyen
Saint-Oyen: Alpine Village at the Gateway to Gran San Bernardo
Saint-Oyen is a small municipality in the Aosta Valley, northwest Italy, sitting at roughly 1,370 metres above sea level along the SS27 road toward the Great St Bernard Pass (Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard). The village lies approximately 30 km northeast of Aosta city and borders the communes of Saint-Rhémy-en-Bosses and Etroubles. Its compact historic core, stone-built houses, and meadows flanked by the Graian Alps define the landscape. The Great St Bernard Hospice, founded in the 11th century by Saint Bernard of Menthon, sits 24 km further up the valley near the Swiss border and draws visitors through Saint-Oyen each summer season.
Where to Stay & Getting Around
Accommodation in Saint-Oyen is limited to small family-run hotels and agriturismo properties, making it a quiet base compared to the busier resort of Courmayeur, 45 km west. The A5 motorway links Aosta (30 km) to Turin in roughly 90 minutes. Local buses connect the village to Aosta on weekdays.
Practical Tips
- Season: The pass road closes in winter; visit May–October for full access.
- Altitude: Pack warm layers — evenings drop sharply even in July.
- Base town: Aosta offers the nearest rail connections and larger hotel range.
