Étroubles: Mountain Village in the Aosta Valley

Étroubles is a mountain village in the Aosta Valley, northwestern Italy, sitting at roughly 1,270 metres above sea level on the ancient Roman road leading to the Great St Bernard Pass. The village has fewer than 500 permanent residents, yet its stone-built centre — the borgata — retains an authenticity that larger Alpine resorts have lost. Each summer, open-air sculptures installed along the main lane turn the village into an informal art trail, drawing visitors who combine culture with altitude.

Most guests arrive for hiking and cycling on the routes that connect Aosta (about 15 km to the east) with the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard on the Swiss border. In winter, the area links to the Valdigne ski network, and cross-country tracks run directly from the village. Walkers following the Via Francigena pilgrimage route also pass through Étroubles, since the Great St Bernard hospice — founded in the 11th century by Bernard of Menthon — lies just beyond the pass.

Accommodation options are limited to small hotels, guesthouses, and agriturismo properties, keeping the atmosphere quiet. The nearest train station is in Aosta, served by regional rail from Turin in under two hours. Visitors staying in the village are within 30 km of both the Mont Blanc tunnel entrance at Courmayeur and the Roman amphitheatre in Aosta city.
