About Turin

The most practical bases in Turin are Centro Storico around Piazza Castello, within walking distance of the Egyptian Museum and Mole Antonelliana; Quadrilatero Romano for aperitivo bars and trattorias; and San Salvario for a younger, livelier atmosphere south of the centre. Most visitors stay two to three nights. Turin Caselle Airport is 15 km north, roughly 40 minutes by train.

Where to Stay in Turin's Districts

Centro Storico anchors the city around Piazza Castello and the Palazzo Reale. Hotels here suit travellers wanting walkable access to the Egyptian Museum — the world's second-largest collection of Egyptian antiquities outside Cairo — and the Mole Antonelliana, constructed in 1863 and now home to the National Cinema Museum. Quadrilatero Romano, the old Roman grid north of Via Garibaldi, is the neighbourhood for aperitivo culture: narrow streets lined with vermouth bars and wine cellars active from early evening. San Salvario, south of the centre near Porta Nuova station, is more affordable and draws a younger crowd to its cafés and street food stalls.

Getting Around

Porta Nuova is Turin's main rail hub, with direct trains to Milan in 45 minutes and to Paris via the Fréjus tunnel in under four hours. Two metro lines link the southern suburbs to Piazza XVIII Dicembre. Walking covers most of the historic centre; taxis handle the remaining gaps.

Practical Tips

  • Airport transfer: Sadem buses run from Caselle Airport to Porta Nuova every 30 minutes; journey time is around 40 minutes.
  • Best season: April–June and September–October bring mild temperatures; August sees many local businesses close.
  • Chocolate and coffee: Turin is the origin of gianduja and the bicerin drink; historic cafés on Via Po predate 1800.
  • Currency: Euro (€); ATMs are widely available near Piazza San Carlo.
