About Valderice

Valderice

Valderice sits on the northwestern tip of Sicily, roughly 10 km north of Trapani and 5 km below the walled hilltop town of Erice at 751 m elevation. The comune straddles the lower slopes of Monte San Giuliano, giving most hotels an unobstructed view across the Tyrrhenian Sea toward the Egadi Islands. The population is around 12,000, spread across the frazioni of Bonagia, Fontanasalsa, and Guarrato — each with its own character.

Visitors base themselves here to reach Erice by cable car from Trapani, explore the Zingaro Nature Reserve 25 km northeast, and day-trip to the salt pans of Marsala. The 16th-century Aragonese watchtower at Bonagia, once guarding a tuna fishery, anchors the small harbour and offers snorkelling on rocky seabed. Families and cyclists favour Valderice over Trapani city for quieter roads and sea-facing terraces.

Sicily's A29 motorway links Valderice to Palermo Falcone–Borsellino Airport in approximately 45 minutes. Trapani Birgi Airport is 20 km south and handles Ryanair routes from several northern European cities seasonally.
