Mazara del Vallo sits on Sicily's south-western tip, 124 km from Palermo, in the province of Trapani. The city's character is shaped by centuries of Arab rule — the Kasbah quarter, settled from 827 AD onward, remains one of the most intact Arab urban fabrics in Europe. Narrow whitewashed lanes run between the Norman cathedral of San Salvatore and the 11th-century Church of Sant'Agostino, giving the old town a density of medieval stone rarely matched in western Sicily.
