Cross-border shoppers and French day-trippers fill the Friday market — one of the largest open-air markets on the Italian Riviera — drawn by lower prices on food, leather, and textiles. Garden enthusiasts target the Hanbury Botanical Gardens at La Mortola, 4 km west on the Capo Mortola promontory, founded in 1867 and home to over 5,000 plant species from five continents. Hikers use Ventimiglia as the coastal start of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri long-distance trail. The town also sits on the main rail line linking Genoa to Nice, making it a practical interchange for travel along the Côte d'Azur.
