About Isolabona
Isolabona
Isolabona sits in the Nervia Valley in western Liguria, roughly 20 kilometres inland from the Riviera dei Fiori coast and about 12 kilometres from Ventimiglia. The village preserves a compact medieval core anchored by the 15th-century Castello dei Doria, whose square tower is visible from the valley road. The surrounding hills are planted with olive groves that produce the small, flavourful Taggiasca olive — a staple of Ligurian cuisine. The Nervia river runs below the village, and the valley road connects Isolabona to the larger centre of Dolceacqua, 4 kilometres to the south, where a famous arched bridge was painted by Claude Monet in 1884.
Visitors come mainly for quiet rural tourism, hiking trails through the Maritime Alps foothills, and the network of medieval villages along the Nervia Valley. Cyclists use the SP64 valley road as a route linking the coast to the inland hills. The village is also a base for day trips to the French border market town of Ventimiglia and to the Balzi Rossi prehistoric caves near Grimaldi.
Isolabona has limited accommodation; most properties are agriturismo-style or small guesthouses within or just outside the historic centre. The nearest train station is Ventimiglia, served by regional trains from Genoa and Nice.
