About Perinaldo
Perinaldo: Hilltop Village of the Astronomer Cassini
Perinaldo sits at 590 metres above sea level in the Ligurian Alps, roughly 12 km north of Bordighera and 8 km from the French border. The village is best known as the birthplace of Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625–1712), the astronomer who identified the gap in Saturn's rings now named after him. A small astronomical observatory, the Osservatorio Astronomico G.D. Cassini, still operates here and opens for public nights when skies are clear. The medieval centre preserves the 17th-century Church of San Nicola and narrow caruggi lanes typical of inland Liguria.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Perinaldo is limited to a handful of agriturismi and B&Bs within the village walls, making it better suited as a day trip from larger bases such as Sanremo (22 km southwest) or Ventimiglia (18 km south). Visitors drawn by dark-sky tourism or the Cassini heritage tend to book rooms in the valley towns and drive up the SP65 provincial road.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: No rail connection; the nearest station is Bordighera on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line, then a 20-minute drive.
- Best season: Spring and autumn offer clear skies for stargazing and mild temperatures for walking the ridge trails.
- Local market: A small weekly market runs on Saturdays in the lower village square.
