About Pornassio
Pornassio
Pornassio is a small comune in the Arroscia Valley, Province of Imperia, Liguria, roughly 40 kilometres north of the Riviera dei Fiori coastline. The village sits at around 700 metres above sea level on the southern slopes of the Maritime Alps, giving it a cooler, quieter character than the coastal resorts below. The medieval borgo retains stone streets and a historic parish church, while the surrounding hills are laced with hiking and mountain-bike trails connecting to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri long-distance route.
Visitors tend to be walkers, cyclists, and travellers seeking an unhurried base in inland Liguria away from summer beach crowds. The Arroscia Valley is also noted for Pigato wine, a local white grape variety cultivated along the valley floor, making the area a draw for wine tourism alongside outdoor pursuits. Nearby Pieve di Teco, about 8 kilometres south, adds a well-preserved 14th-century arcaded main street and a broader range of services.
Access is via the SS28 road from Imperia on the coast, roughly a 45-minute drive. The nearest rail station is Imperia Porto Maurizio on the Genoa–Ventimiglia line. Accommodation in and around Pornassio is limited to agriturismo properties and small guesthouses rather than large hotels.
