About Alassio
Alassio
Alassio occupies a south-facing bay in the province of Savona, about 90 km southwest of Genoa. Its beach stretches nearly 3 km — one of the longest sandy shores on the entire Ligurian coast — a rarity among the pebble-dominant Riviera. That single geographic fact draws most visitors: families, couples, and Northern European sun-seekers who return each summer for calm, shallow water and reliable warmth from June through September.
The town centre rewards walkers. The Budello — a narrow pedestrian lane barely 2 m wide — runs parallel to the seafront and is lined with ceramic-fronted shops, trattorias serving trofie al pesto and fresh anchovies, and pasticcerie selling the local brutti ma buoni biscuits. The Muretto di Alassio, a wall near the waterfront decorated with hand-painted tiles signed by celebrity visitors since 1953, anchors the town's identity as a place where mid-20th-century Italian leisure culture crystallised. Ernest Hemingway was among the early signatories.
Alassio connects by regional rail to Savona (around 40 min) and to the French border at Ventimiglia (around 55 min), making day trips to Monaco or San Remo straightforward. Most hotels concentrate within 300 m of the beach; the hillside above the old town offers quieter guesthouses with panoramic bay views.
