About Vieste
Vieste: Gargano Clifftop Town on the Adriatic
Vieste occupies the easternmost tip of the Gargano peninsula in Puglia, where white limestone cliffs drop directly into the Adriatic. The medieval old town sits on a narrow promontory flanked by two beaches — Spiaggia del Castello to the north and Spiaggia di Pizzomunno to the south. The 22-metre sea stack known as the Pizzomunno monolith anchors the southern shore and appears in local legend dating back centuries. A Norman cathedral built in 1170 dominates the hilltop, a few steps from the 13th-century Aragonese castle.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along Lungomare Enrico Mattei and the roads leading to Pugnochiuso, a resort cove 8 km south. The old town (centro storico) holds smaller B&Bs within the whitewashed vicoletti. August fills every property; shoulder season (May–June, September) offers lower rates and uncrowded beaches.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries from Manfredonia (1 hr) or Peschici run May–September; the nearest train station is Foggia, 78 km inland.
- Local transport: Hire a scooter or use seasonal buses along the Gargano coast road.
- Crowds: Book accommodation at least two months ahead for July–August.
- Currency: Cash is preferred at smaller restaurants in the old town.
