About Monteverde

Monteverde: Rome's Hilltop Quarter Above Trastevere

Monteverde sits on the slopes of the Janiculum Hill in western Rome, roughly 2 km southwest of Trastevere and about 4 km from the Colosseum. The neighborhood developed in two phases: Monteverde Vecchio, built in the 1920s–1940s with Liberty-style villas and tree-lined streets, and Monteverde Nuovo, a denser postwar residential grid. Together they form one of Rome's most livable quarters, drawing professionals, families, and long-stay visitors who prefer local markets and trattorias over tourist circuits.

Where to Stay

Hotels and guesthouses in Monteverde offer quieter nights than central Rome, with Viale Glorioso and Via Carini providing easy bus connections to Trastevere (lines 23 and 75) and the metro at Ottaviano. The Villa Pamphilj park — Rome's largest public green space at 184 hectares — borders the neighborhood to the west.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Tram 8 links Monteverde Nuovo to Largo Argentina in under 15 minutes.
  • Best market: The covered market on Via Ozanam runs Tuesday through Saturday mornings.
  • Timing: Book accommodation at least three weeks ahead for late spring and October stays.
