About George Town

George Town: UNESCO Heritage on Penang Island

George Town, the capital of Penang state in northwestern Malaysia, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 alongside Melaka. The city occupies the northeastern tip of Penang Island, roughly 330 km north of Kuala Lumpur. British officer Francis Light established the settlement in 1786, and its historic core still holds Straits Chinese shophouses, Tamil temples, and clan jetties extending over the sea — a layered record of the Strait of Malacca trade era.

Where to Stay

Hotels concentrate in two main zones. The Heritage Zone around Armenian Street and Lebuh Chulia gives walk access to the Khoo Kongsi clan house, iron street-art murals installed from 2012 onward, and the Penang Peranakan Mansion. The Gurney Drive seafront corridor, 3 km northwest, hosts international brands and hawker centres serving char kway teow and assam laksa. Converted shophouse guesthouses dominate the budget tier inside the heritage core.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Rapid Penang buses link the city centre to Penang Hill's cable-car base at Air Itam, 6 km southwest.
  • Weather: Rain falls year-round; September to November sees the heaviest precipitation.
  • Currency: Malaysian ringgit (MYR); ATMs are plentiful along Lebuh Pantai.
  • Ferry: The Penang Ferry from Butterworth crosses in 15 minutes and costs under MYR 2.
