About Ipoh

Ipoh: Limestone Karst City of Perak, Malaysia

Ipoh, the capital of Perak state, sits 200 km north of Kuala Lumpur along the Klang Valley–Ipoh rail corridor. The city grew wealthy on tin mining in the late 19th century, leaving behind a compact colonial core along Jalan Sultan Yusuf and ornate Chinese merchant shophouses in the Old Town district. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower (1909) and the Ipoh Railway Station — nicknamed the "Taj Mahal of Ipoh" — anchor the civic quarter.

Where to Stay in Ipoh

Most hotels cluster in two zones. New Town, east of the Kinta River, holds mid-range and business hotels within walking distance of restaurants on Jalan Sultan Iskandar. Old Town, west of the river, suits travellers wanting boutique stays inside restored shophouses near Concubine Lane and the Han Chin Pet Soo tin-mining museum. Both zones are within 2 km of each other.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: KTM ETS trains from Kuala Lumpur Sentral reach Ipoh in roughly 2 hours; book tickets at least a week ahead during school holidays.
  • Local food: White coffee, bean sprout chicken, and dim sum along Jalan Theatre draw food-focused visitors from across Malaysia.
  • Climate: Expect afternoon rain year-round; mornings are generally dry for visiting the Sam Poh Tong cave temple, 5 km south of the city centre.
