About Langkawi
Langkawi: Duty-Free Archipelago off Malaysia's Andaman Coast
Langkawi is a group of 99 islands in Kedah state, roughly 30 km off Malaysia's northwest coast and 51 km from the Thai border. The main island, Pulau Langkawi, earned duty-free status in 1987, which still draws shoppers to Kuah town for discounted alcohol, chocolate, and electronics. Beyond Kuah, the island is defined by its geology — a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2007, with limestone formations, mangrove forests, and the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park in the northeast. The SkyCab cable car rises 708 metres to the peak of Gunung Mat Cincang, offering views across the Strait of Malacca.
Where to Stay in Langkawi
Accommodation clusters along three main coastal strips. Pantai Cenang on the southwest coast is the most developed, with beach bars, water-sport operators, and hotels ranging from budget guesthouses to 4-star resorts. Pantai Tengah, immediately south, is quieter. The north shore around Tanjung Rhu holds a handful of larger resort properties set against limestone cliffs.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Langkawi International Airport receives direct flights from Kuala Lumpur (55 min), Singapore, and several Thai cities; a ferry from Penang takes roughly 2.5 hours.
- Best time to visit: November to April brings dry weather; May to October sees the southwest monsoon with heavier rain on the west coast.
- Alcohol: Duty-free means significantly lower prices than mainland Malaysia — stock up in Kuah before heading to resorts.
