About Cancún
The Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) suits beach-resort travelers — a 22 km barrier island strip on the Caribbean — while Downtown Cancún (Ciudad Cancún) offers local markets, cheaper rates, and the R-1 bus connection. Puerto Juárez is the ferry hub for Isla Mujeres, 13 minutes offshore. Most visitors stay four to seven nights; Cancún International Airport is 20 km south of the Hotel Zone, roughly 20 minutes by taxi.
Where to Stay
Zona Hotelera holds the bulk of all-inclusive resorts along Boulevard Kukulcán, directly on Playa Delfines or Playa Langosta. The northern tip near Punta Cancún clusters casinos, shopping malls like La Isla, and the main nightlife strip. Downtown Cancún — centered on Parque Las Palapas — attracts longer-stay travelers and those visiting Mercado 28 for regional food. Families day-tripping to Chichén Itzá (200 km west on MEX-180) often base themselves downtown to avoid Hotel Zone traffic.
Getting Around
The R-1 bus runs 24 hours between Downtown and the full length of Boulevard Kukulcán for under 15 MXN. Taxis between the airport and Hotel Zone are fixed-rate by zone. Ferries to Isla Mujeres depart from Gran Puerto terminal every 30 minutes during peak hours.
