About Cozumel
Cozumel: Reef Capital of the Mexican Caribbean
Cozumel is an island municipality in Quintana Roo, Mexico, situated 19 km off the Yucatán Peninsula coast opposite Playa del Carmen. The island owes its global reputation to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system on Earth, which runs along Cozumel's leeward (western) shore. Jacques Cousteau featured the reef in a 1961 documentary, triggering five decades of dive tourism. Today, the Palancar Reef and Santa Rosa Wall draw divers from over 60 countries annually.
Visitors fall into two categories: cruise passengers who disembark at the Punta Langosta or SSA Mexico pier in San Miguel de Cozumel for a few hours, and independent travelers who stay several nights to dive, snorkel, or explore the island's interior. San Miguel, the only town, runs along the western waterfront and holds the ferry terminals, restaurants along Avenida Rafael Melgar, and the majority of the island's hotels. The eastern coast faces open Caribbean, with rougher surf and near-empty beaches like Playa Bonita and Chen Río.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ferries from Playa del Carmen run roughly every hour and take 45 minutes; Cozumel International Airport (CZM) receives direct flights from several U.S. cities.
- Dive season: Visibility exceeds 30 m year-round; water temperature stays between 25–29 °C.
- Getting around: Rent a scooter or 4x4 to reach the eastern beaches; taxis from the pier to hotels in San Miguel cost roughly 60–80 MXN.
- Currency: Many businesses accept USD, but pesos yield better exchange rates at local shops.
