About Holbox Island
Holbox Island: Car-Free Shores of the Yucatán
Holbox Island sits at the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula, separated from the mainland by the shallow Laguna Yalahau. The island stretches roughly 42 km long but narrows to under 1 km at several points. No paved roads and no private cars operate here — golf carts and bicycles handle all movement. The island falls entirely within the Yum Balam Biosphere Reserve, which protects mangroves, seagrass beds, and a resident flamingo population visible year-round in the western lagoon.
Who Visits and When
Travelers arrive primarily to snorkel alongside whale sharks (June 1–September 15 by federal regulation), the world's largest fish, which congregate in waters north of the island. Kitesurfers favor flat Laguna Yalahau from November through March when northeast trade winds peak. The main sandy strip, Calle Tiburón Ballena, holds most restaurants and small hotels within two blocks of the ferry pier. Bioluminescent plankton lights the shallows on moonless nights between July and October — a feature rare on Yucatán's Caribbean coast.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from Cancún reach Chiquila port in about 2.5 hours; the ferry crossing takes 30 minutes.
- On-island transport: Golf cart rentals average 500 MXN per day; most hotels sit within 15 minutes' walk of the pier.
- Cash: ATMs are limited — carry sufficient pesos before boarding the ferry.
- Whale shark tours: Book at least two weeks ahead for June and July departures.
