About Budva
Budva: Adriatic Walled Town on Montenegro's Riviera
Budva sits on Montenegro's central Adriatic coast, roughly 25 km south of Kotor and 65 km from Podgorica. The old town — a compact limestone peninsula enclosed by 15th-century Venetian walls — is one of the best-preserved medieval settlements on the eastern Adriatic. Inside the walls, narrow alleys connect the Citadel (rebuilt after a 1979 earthquake), the Cathedral of St. Ivan, and a dozen small squares. The broader municipality extends across sandy coves including Mogren Beach and the crescent bay of Jaz, used as a concert venue and favored by kitesurfers.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones: the Stari Grad (old town) perimeter for stone-house boutiques with sea views; Slovenska Obala, the main promenade strip, for large resort and apartment hotels; and Bečići, 3 km southeast, where several 4-star and 5-star beach resorts operate year-round. The season peaks July–August when room rates rise sharply and the old town fills with visitors from Serbia, Russia, and Western Europe.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Tivat Airport is 23 km north; Podgorica Airport is 65 km east. Buses connect both to Budva's main station on Ivana Milutinovića street.
- Getting around: The old town is pedestrian-only. Rent a scooter or use taxis for Bečići and Sveti Stefan (8 km south).
- Season: Book July–August hotels at least six weeks ahead. May, June, and September offer comparable weather with lower rates.
