About Herceg-Novi
Herceg-Novi: Gateway to the Bay of Kotor
Herceg-Novi sits at the mouth of Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor), where the Adriatic meets Montenegro's dramatic limestone karst. Founded in 1382 by Bosnian King Tvrtko I, the town passed through Ottoman, Spanish, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian hands — each leaving a distinct layer on the Old Town (Stari Grad). The Kanli Kula fortress (Bloody Tower, 16th century Ottoman) and the Forte Mare sea fortress frame the waterfront promenade, Šetalište Pet Danica. Mimosa trees line the esplanade, flowering from January through March and giving the city its nickname: the Mimosa Town.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster along the Igalo peninsula, 2 km west of the Old Town, where the Institute for Physical Medicine draws health-tourism guests year-round. The Topla neighbourhood, directly below the Old Town, offers smaller guesthouses within walking distance of the clock tower and Belavista square. A water taxi connects Herceg-Novi to Kotor in about 25 minutes, making it a practical base for exploring the entire bay.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Tivat Airport lies 28 km southeast; Dubrovnik Airport is 50 km northwest.
- Season: July–August brings peak crowds; May and September offer warm sea temperatures with fewer visitors.
- Currency: Euro (EUR) is the official currency in Montenegro.
- Ferry access: Car ferries cross from Kamenari to Lepetane in 5 minutes, bypassing the full bay circuit.
