About Kotor

Kotor: Medieval Walls Above the Adriatic Fjord

Kotor sits at the southeastern tip of the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), a drowned river canyon often called Europe's southernmost fjord. The city's medieval old town, enclosed by 4.5 km of Venetian-era fortification walls, earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. The walls climb 260 metres to the Fortress of San Giovanni, rewarding the ascent with views across terracotta rooftops and the grey-green bay below. Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, consecrated in 1166, anchors the Trg Sv. Tripuna square at the old town's core.

Where to Stay in Kotor

Accommodation clusters in three zones. The old town itself offers boutique hotels and guesthouses inside the walls — quieter after day-trippers leave by evening. Dobrota, a strip of Baroque sea-captains' palaces 2 km north along the bay shore, suits travellers wanting calmer surroundings. Škaljari, on the hillside above, provides budget options with bay views at lower rates. Most properties lie within a 10-minute walk of the old town's Sea Gate, the main western entrance.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Tivat Airport is 8 km south; Podgorica Airport is 85 km east via mountain road.
  • Wall climb: The fortress ascent takes 45–60 minutes; open daily, entry fee applies.
  • Crowds: July and August bring cruise-ship arrivals between 09:00 and 17:00 — mornings inside the walls are significantly quieter before 08:30.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR) is the official currency in Montenegro.
