Cetinje: Montenegro's Royal Mountain Capital

Cetinje sits at 670 metres elevation on the Lovćen plateau, roughly 25 km southwest of Podgorica via a serpentine mountain road. Founded in 1482 by Zetan ruler Ivan Crnojević, it served as the capital of the Principality — and later Kingdom — of Montenegro until 1918. Despite a modest population of around 13,000, the town holds a concentration of 19th-century royal architecture unmatched in the country: the Cetinje Monastery (1701), the former royal palace Biljarda (1838), and a row of old embassies that once housed European powers.

History enthusiasts, day-trippers from the Bay of Kotor coast, and Montenegrin visitors come for the national museums and the monastery, which preserves a relic of John the Baptist. The National Museum of Montenegro occupies several buildings in the compact centre. Hikers use Cetinje as a base for Lovćen National Park, whose peak Jezerski vrh (1,749 m) hosts the Njegoš Mausoleum, a 461-step climb above the town.
