About Maastricht
Maastricht: Where Roman Foundations Meet Burgundian Living
Maastricht sits at the southern tip of the Netherlands, wedged between Belgium and Germany along the Maas (Meuse) River. The city's Roman origins date to 50 BCE, making it one of the oldest urban settlements in the country. The Vrijthof square anchors the historic core, flanked by the Basilica of Saint Servatius — built over the tomb of the region's first bishop, who died in 384 CE. Two medieval fortification rings still trace the city's outline, and 1,400 meters of underground marl caves (the Zonneberg and North Caves) cut beneath the hill district of Wyck.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three distinct zones. The Sint Pietersberg hillside area suits travelers after quiet streets near the caves and Fort Sint Pieter. Wyck, east of the river, offers design-led boutique properties within 400 meters of the train station. The Binnenstad (inner city) places guests within walking distance of the Vrijthof, Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein, and the weekend antique market on Stokstraat.
Practical Tips

- Best time to visit: The Carnival celebration in February draws tens of thousands — book hotels at least 8 weeks ahead.
- Currency: Euro (€); card payments accepted widely.
- Language: Dutch; French is understood near the Belgian border.
