About Delft

Delft: Canals, Ceramics, and Golden Age Architecture

Delft, in South Holland, sits 12 km northwest of Rotterdam and 15 km southeast of The Hague. The city gained international recognition in the 17th century through two distinct exports: the blue-and-white tin-glazed earthenware known as Delftware, still produced at Royal Delft (De Porceleyne Fles) founded in 1653, and the paintings of Johannes Vermeer, born here in 1632. The Markt, one of the largest historic squares in the Netherlands, is flanked by the Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (1381) and the Renaissance Stadhuis. Willem of Orange, founder of the Dutch Republic, is entombed inside the Nieuwe Kerk.

Where to Stay in Delft

Most hotels cluster around the Markt and along the Oude Delft canal, the oldest canal in the city. Boutique properties occupy converted canal houses; larger business hotels are concentrated near Delft railway station, a 10-minute walk from the historic center. The station connects to Rotterdam Centraal in 12 minutes and The Hague Centraal in 10 minutes by intercity train.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The compact centre is best on foot or by bicycle; bike rentals are available near the station.
  • Canal boats: Guided boat tours depart from the Koornmarkt April through October.
  • Royal Delft: Book timed entry in advance during summer; the factory and museum close on Sundays in winter.
  • Market days: The general market runs every Thursday and Saturday on the Markt.
