About Rotterdam
Rotterdam: Europe's Largest Port and a Laboratory for Architecture
Rotterdam sits at the mouth of the Rhine-Meuse delta, 25 km south of Amsterdam, and handles roughly 470 million tonnes of cargo annually — making it the busiest port in Europe. Rebuilt almost entirely after May 1940 bombing raids, the city became a testing ground for bold architecture. The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen, 1984) by Piet Blom, the tilted Markthal (2014) with its 11,000 m² printed ceiling, and the Erasmusbrug suspension bridge define a skyline unlike any other Dutch city.
Where to Stay in Rotterdam
Hotels cluster around Rotterdam Centraal station — redesigned in 2014 — and along the Kop van Zuid waterfront district, where converted warehouses share quays with contemporary towers. The Wijnhaven and Scheepvaartkwartier neighbourhoods offer walkable access to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen depot and the SS Rotterdam, a retired ocean liner moored permanently as a hotel and museum.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The RET metro, tram, and water taxi network covers the city; a single OV-chipkaart works across all modes.
- Day trips: Kinderdijk's 19 windmills (UNESCO, 1997) lie 15 km east by waterbus.
- Airport access: Rotterdam The Hague Airport is 8 km northwest; trains reach Centraal in under 15 minutes.
