About The Hague

The Hague: Seat of Government, International Courts, and North Sea Shore

The Hague (Den Haag) serves as the Netherlands' political capital and the seat of the Dutch government, even though Amsterdam holds the constitutional capital title. The Binnenhof, a 13th-century Gothic complex at the city's centre, houses the Dutch parliament and remains one of Europe's oldest continuously used government buildings. The International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court both operate here, drawing diplomats and legal professionals from across the globe year-round. The Mauritshuis museum, on the Hofvijver pond, holds Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) and Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp (1632).

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster around Centrum, within walking distance of the Binnenhof, and along the Laan van Nieuw Oost-Indië corridor near the international institutions. The Scheveningen seaside district, roughly 5 km west of Centrum, offers beachfront properties and a pier dating to 1961. The Statenkwartier neighbourhood provides quieter, residential-scale accommodation between the two zones.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Rotterdam The Hague Airport sits 10 km east; Amsterdam Schiphol connects by direct train in under 50 minutes.
  • Transit: Tram lines 1, 9, and 17 link Centrum to Scheveningen; a day pass covers all HTM tram and bus routes.
  • Timing: The Tong Tong Fair, the world's largest Eurasian cultural festival, runs late May to early June at the Malieveld.
