About Haarlem
Haarlem: Tulip Fields, Golden Age Canals, and the Frans Hals Museum
Haarlem, capital of North Holland province, sits 20 km west of Amsterdam on the Spaarne River. The city reached its peak in the 17th century as a centre of Dutch painting — Frans Hals worked here for decades, and the museum bearing his name on the Groot Heiligland holds the world's largest collection of his portraits. The Grote Markt, a broad medieval square anchored by the Grote Kerk van Sint-Bavo (1370–1538), remains the civic heart. Narrow canal-side streets between the square and the Spaarne pass gabled merchant houses largely unchanged since the 1600s.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster around the Grote Markt and along Kruisstraat, the main shopping street, placing guests within walking distance of both the Frans Hals Museum and the Teylers Museum — the Netherlands' oldest, founded 1778. Visitors arriving from Amsterdam Centraal reach Haarlem station in 15 minutes by direct intercity train; the station's 1908 Art Nouveau building is notable in itself.
Practical Tips
- Bulb fields: The Bollenstreek tulip corridor runs south toward Lisse and Keukenhof; peak bloom falls between late March and mid-May.
- Getting around: The city centre is compact enough to cover on foot; bike hire is available from the station forecourt.
- Day-trip logic: Haarlem works as a base for both Amsterdam and the North Sea beach town of Zandvoort aan Zee, 11 km west by train.
