About Amsterdam
Amsterdam: Canals, Golden Age Architecture, and a Compact City Grid
Amsterdam sits at the confluence of the Amstel river and the IJ bay, roughly 20 km from the North Sea coast. The city's Canal Ring — designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 — was engineered in the 17th century and remains the structural backbone of daily life. Some 165 canals thread through Jordaan, De Pijp, and the Grachtengordel, connecting neighbourhoods that each carry a distinct character. The Rijksmuseum on Museumplein holds over 8,000 objects from the Dutch Golden Age, including Rembrandt's Night Watch (1642).
Where to Stay in Amsterdam
Most hotels cluster in four zones: the Centrum (Dam Square and Rokin), the Museumkwartier near Vondelpark, the Jordaan district west of Prinsengracht, and the post-industrial Noord across the IJ, reachable in 4 minutes by free ferry from behind Centraal Station. Budget properties are more common in De Pijp and Oost; canal-house conversions in the Grachtengordel carry a premium.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Tram lines 2, 11, 12, and 19 cover most tourist corridors; a 24-hour GVB pass costs around €9.
- Canal boats: Rondvaart boats depart from near the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht and from Damrak.
- Cycling: The city has 800+ km of dedicated cycle lanes; rental shops operate from €12/day.
- Airport access: Schiphol Airport lies 18 km southwest; direct trains run every 10 minutes and reach Centraal Station in roughly 15 minutes.
