About Sint Maartenszee

Sint Maartenszee: North Sea Beach Village in Noord-Holland

Sint Maartenszee is a small coastal resort on the North Sea, roughly 60 km north of Amsterdam in the municipality of Schagen, Noord-Holland. The village sits behind the primary dune belt separating the Zandweg beachfront from the flat polder landscape inland. It draws mainly Dutch and Belgian families who arrive for the wide, uncrowded North Sea beach — one of the cleaner stretches along the Hollandse Kust Noord coastal strip. The nearest town, Sint Maarten, lies about 2 km east; Callantsoog is 3 km south along the same dune coast.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Accommodation in Sint Maartenszee centres on small hotels, pension-style guesthouses, and holiday apartments within walking distance of the beach access points. Visitors travelling by public transport use bus line 140 from Alkmaar station (approx. 40 minutes), which stops in the village centre. Cyclists can follow the LF Kustroute (coast-to-coast long-distance cycle route) that passes through the dunes here. The village has no train station.

Practical Tips

  • Season: The beach is most accessible May–September; North Sea water temperature peaks around 18 °C in August.
  • Parking: A paid car park operates near the Strandopgang (beach access) during summer months.
  • Wind: Pack a windbreak — the dune gap channels onshore winds even on clear days.
  • Nearest services: A larger supermarket and pharmacy are in Sint Maarten village, not in Sint Maartenszee itself.
