About Ålesund
Ålesund: Art Nouveau Harbour on Norway's Atlantic Coast
Ålesund sits on a cluster of islands at the mouth of the Geirangerfjord approach, 240 km north of Bergen on Norway's west coast. The city rebuilt almost entirely in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style after a fire destroyed 850 buildings in January 1904, leaving it with one of Europe's most coherent early-20th-century streetscapes. The Jugendstilsenteret museum on Apotekergata documents this period with original interiors and façade archives. Climbing the 418 steps to Aksla viewpoint in Fjellstua reveals the full geometry of the city spread across five islands connected by bridges and tunnels.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate on Nørvøya, the central island, within 600 m of the harbour ferry terminals. The Brosundet canal district holds a mix of converted warehouses and newer boutique properties. Visitors arriving for Geirangerfjord day cruises — the fjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site listed in 2005 — use Ålesund as the nearest overnight base; the drive to Geiranger village covers 105 km via the Trollstigen mountain road.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ålesund Airport Vigra sits 20 km northwest; bus route 4 connects to the city centre in 25 minutes.
- Season: May–September for fjord cruises; February for the annual Ålesund Carnival (Sunnmørskarnevalet).
- Ferry access: Hurtigruten coastal ships stop at the main quay year-round.
