About Geiranger Fjord
Geiranger Fjord: UNESCO Waterway in Western Norway
Geiranger Fjord stretches 15 kilometres inland from the Sunnylvsfjorden in Møre og Romsdal county, cutting through rock walls that rise over 1,400 metres above sea level. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 alongside Nærøyfjord, it draws roughly 700,000 visitors annually — a striking number for a village of around 250 permanent residents. Waterfalls cascade directly from highland farms: The Seven Sisters, The Suitor, and Bridal Veil are the three most photographed, all visible from the fjord surface.
Where to Stay in Geiranger
Accommodation clusters in the village of Geiranger at the fjord's eastern head and along the Eagle Road (Ørnesvingen) switchback above. Hotels range from waterfront guesthouses to hillside lodges with fjord-view terraces. The season runs May through September; outside those months most properties close and ferry services reduce sharply.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Ålesund Airport (AES) sits 85 km west; car ferries cross from Hellesylt year-round.
- Ferry crossings: The Hellesylt–Geiranger route takes 65 minutes and operates multiple daily sailings in summer.
- Road access: National Scenic Route 63 via Trollstigen adds 2–3 hours from Åndalsnes but passes major viewpoints.
- Book early: Accommodation sells out months ahead for July and August.
