About Trondheim

Trondheim: Norway's Medieval Capital on the Nidelva River

Trondheim sits at the mouth of the Nidelva River on the Trondheimsfjord, 550 km north of Oslo. Founded in 997 AD by King Olav Tryggvason, it served as Norway's capital through the medieval period. Nidaros Cathedral, completed in its current form around 1300, remains the northernmost Gothic cathedral in the world and the traditional coronation church of Norwegian monarchs. The Bryggen-style warehouses lining Nedre Elvehavn and the wooden Gamle Bybro bridge frame the city's most photographed riverbank.

Where to Stay in Trondheim

Most hotels cluster around Midtbyen, the pedestrianised centre, within a 10-minute walk of the cathedral. Nedre Elvehavn, a converted wharf district, offers boutique options with fjord-facing rooms. The Nedre Elvehavn to Gløshaugen corridor also serves visitors to Ntnu (Norway's largest university), which draws a steady flow of academic and conference guests. Budget travellers find hostels near Torget, the central market square.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Trondheim Airport Værnes sits 35 km east of the city; airport express trains run every 15 minutes and reach Trondheim Central Station in 35 minutes.
  • Getting around: The city centre is compact and walkable; trams (Gråkallbanen) connect the centre to Lian recreational forest to the west.
  • Best season: June–August brings 19–20 hours of daylight; the St. Olav Days festival runs late July around the cathedral each year.
  • Currency: Norwegian krone (NOK); card payment accepted almost universally.
