About Tromsø
Stay in Sentrum (the city centre on Tromsøya island) for walkable access to the Arctic Cathedral and harbour restaurants; Storgata suits shoppers and nightlife; Langnes sits 3 km west near the airport for early departures; and Kvaløya island offers quieter fjord-side lodging. Most visitors stay three to four nights. Tromsø Airport is 5 km from Sentrum — under 15 minutes by bus.
Where to Stay in Each District
Sentrum is the obvious base: the 1965 Arctic Cathedral (Ishavskatedralen) is a 10-minute walk across Tromsøysund bridge, and the Polar Museum sits on the waterfront. Storgata, Tromsø's main pedestrian street, runs through Sentrum and concentrates cafés, bars, and the Saturday market. Langnes, beside Tromsø Airport Langnes, suits transit passengers and conference guests at the Radisson Blu. Kvaløya island, connected by the Sandnessund bridge, attracts aurora chasers who prefer dark-sky positions away from street lighting.
Getting Around
Tromsø is compact — Sentrum is walkable in 20 minutes end to end. Bus routes 20, 24, and 40 link the airport, Sentrum, and the cable-car base at Fjellheisen (412 m elevation). The cable car runs year-round and reaches the summit in four minutes. Car hire is practical for day trips to Lyngen Alps or Senja island (roughly 2 hours by road).
