About Chachapoyas
Chachapoyas: Cloud Forest Capital of Amazonas
Chachapoyas, capital of Peru's Amazonas region, sits at 2,335 metres in the northern Andes, roughly 1,200 km north of Lima. Founded by the Spanish in 1538, the city serves as the base for exploring the pre-Inca Chachapoya civilisation — the "Warriors of the Clouds" — who built the cliff-face tomb complex of Kuélap and the sarcophagi of Karajía between roughly 900 and 1475 AD. A gondola system opened in 2017 reduces the ascent to Kuélap's 3,000-room citadel to a 20-minute cable-car ride from the valley floor.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around Plaza de Armas, the colonial heart of the city, and along Jirón Amazonas. Smaller guesthouses operate near the Mercado Central, within walking distance of tour agencies arranging day trips to Gocta waterfall — at 771 metres one of the tallest in the world, located about 67 km north-east. Budget and mid-range options dominate; a handful of boutique hotels occupy restored republican-era buildings.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Fly into Jaén (JEQ, ~2.5 hrs by road) or Tarapoto (TPP, ~5 hrs); no commercial airport serves Chachapoyas directly.
- Climate: Pack a waterproof layer year-round; cloud forest rainfall peaks January–April.
- Altitude: At 2,335 m, allow one rest day before trekking to higher ruins.
- Currency: Carry Peruvian soles — ATM coverage in town is limited outside the plaza.
