About Trujillo
Trujillo: Colonial Capital of Peru's North Coast
Trujillo, capital of the La Libertad region, sits 560 km north of Lima on Peru's Pacific coast. Founded in 1534 by Diego de Almagro, the city retains a well-preserved colonial core centered on the Plaza de Armas, framed by the Cathedral of Trujillo (completed 1666) and pastel-painted mansions. The surrounding desert plain holds two of South America's most significant archaeological sites: Chan Chan, the 14 km² adobe citadel built by the Chimú civilization around 850 CE and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, and the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, Moche pyramid complexes dating to 100–700 CE.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster within the historic center, placing guests within walking distance of the Plaza de Armas, the Cassinelli Museum, and the main restaurant strip along Calle Pizarro. Budget and mid-range properties line Avenida España. Travelers visiting Huanchaco, a fishing village 12 km west known for reed totora boats still used by local fishermen, find a quieter alternative with direct beach access.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trujillo's Capitán FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos Airport (TRU) receives daily flights from Lima (1 hr). Buses from Lima take 8–9 hours on the Pan-American Highway.
- Chan Chan access: The main Tschudi Palace complex lies 5 km northwest of the city center; allow 2 hours minimum.
- Climate: Coastal desert means little rain year-round; average high is 22°C, with cooler evenings June–September.
- Marinera Festival: Held each January, drawing folk dance competitors from across Peru to the city center.
