About Máncora

Máncora: Sun, Surf, and Northern Peru's Warmest Coast

Máncora sits on Peru's far north coast, roughly 1,200 km north of Lima and just 180 km south of the Ecuadorian border in the Piura region. The Humboldt Current weakens this far north, leaving sea temperatures around 22–26 °C year-round — warmer than anywhere else on the Peruvian coast. That warmth draws surfers, kiteboarders, and travelers seeking beach conditions that Lima's grey garúa season never offers. The main break at Punta Máncora works for beginners; more advanced surfers head to Los Órganos, 8 km south.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels concentrate along Avenida Piura, the main beachfront strip, and in quieter pockets north toward Las Pocitas, a stretch of calmer water preferred by families and snorkelers. Budget hostels sit steps from the surf schools; mid-range bungalows with hammock terraces line the northern end. The town itself is walkable end-to-end in under 20 minutes; mototaxis cover the 3 km to Las Pocitas for under 5 soles.

Practical Tips

  • Best months: June–October brings steady offshore winds ideal for surfing; November–April is hotter with occasional rain.
  • Getting there: Cruz del Sur and Oltursa buses run overnight from Lima (17–18 hrs); the nearest airport is Piura (FAT), 120 km south, with domestic flights from Lima.
  • Currency: Bring soles — ATMs exist but run out during peak season holidays.
  • Water: Drink bottled water; tap water is not reliably safe in this area.
