About Camiguin

Camiguin: Island of Seven Volcanoes

Camiguin is a small island province in Northern Mindanao, Philippines, covering roughly 238 sq km — making it one of the smallest provinces in the country. Seven volcanoes rise from the interior, giving Camiguin more volcanoes per square kilometre than any other island on Earth. The most active, Mount Hibok-Hibok (1,332 m), last erupted in 1953. The 1871 eruption of Vulcan Daan submerged an entire cemetery offshore; the Sunken Cemetery cross now marks the site and draws snorkellers year-round.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Most hotels and guesthouses cluster along the northern coastal road between Mambajao (the provincial capital) and Yumbing. The White Island sandbar sits a short bangka ride off the north coast. Ardent Hot Spring in Mambajao and Sto. Niño Cold Spring in Catarman give visitors thermal contrast within 20 km of each other. Katibawasan Falls drops 76 m into a cool pool 7 km south of Mambajao.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Fast ferries run from Balingoan port (Mindanao) to Benoni port in roughly 1.5 hours.
  • Getting around: Habal-habal motorbike taxis and multicabs circle the 64 km coastal road; full circuit takes about 2 hours.
  • Best season: January to May is dry; the Lanzones Festival takes place each October in Mambajao.
  • Pack: A light layer for Hibok-Hibok trails where morning temperatures drop below 20 °C.
