About Siargao Island
Siargao Island: Surf Capital of the Philippines
Siargao Island sits in the Philippine Sea off the northeast coast of Mindanao, roughly 800 km southeast of Manila. The island earned its reputation through Cloud 9, a hollow right-hand reef break that has hosted the Siargao Cup international surfing competition since 1999. Beyond the surf, the island covers approximately 437 sq km of coconut groves, mangrove channels, and tidal lagoons — Sugba Lagoon and the Magpupungko rock pools in Pilar draw visitors who arrive specifically for the tidal formations exposed at low tide.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses concentrate in General Luna, the barangay closest to Cloud 9 and the island's primary strip of cafés and dive shops. Dapa serves as the main port and transport hub, 8 km north of General Luna. Budget surf camps line Tourism Road between the two; mid-range resorts with pools cluster around Cloud 9 Boardwalk. Accommodation prices rise sharply during the Siargao Cup (typically September–October).
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Sayak Airport (IAO) receives flights from Manila and Cebu; the runway handles turboprop and some narrow-body jets.
- Best surf window: August to November for consistent swells; April to June offers calmer water for beginners.
- Island hopping: Bancas to Naked Island, Daku Island, and Guyam Island depart from General Luna; book through guesthouses to fix rates in advance.
- Cash: ATMs in General Luna have limited cash reserves — carry pesos from Cebu or Manila.
