About Burgos

Burgos: Wind Farm Coast at Luzon's Northern Edge

Burgos is a coastal municipality in Ilocos Norte, roughly 80 km north of Laoag City along the South China Sea shore. The town is anchored by the Bangui Wind Farm, a row of 20 wind turbines completed in 2005 — one of the Philippines' first commercial wind installations. The turbines line the beach road, making the coastal highway an attraction in itself. Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, erected in 1892 during Spanish colonial rule and standing 67 metres above sea level, marks the northernmost accessible headland of Luzon near the municipal boundary.

Getting Around

Most visitors arrive via Laoag City, served by daily flights from Manila (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes). From Laoag, shared vans and regional buses cover the 80 km to Burgos in roughly two hours on the national highway. The route follows the Ilocos coast, passing Pagudpud before reaching the wind farm stretch.

Practical Tips

  • Best months: January to April; the northeast monsoon eases and coastal roads stay dry.
  • Cape Bojeador Lighthouse: Open daily; the 180-step interior staircase leads to a viewing deck with sightlines toward the Batanes island chain on clear days.
  • Accommodation: Properties are small-scale; rooms fill quickly during Holy Week and long national weekends — book at least two weeks ahead during peak periods.
