About Braga
Braga: Portugal's Oldest Episcopal City
Braga sits in the Minho region of northwest Portugal, 53 km north of Porto and roughly 360 km north of Lisbon. Founded by the Romans as Bracara Augusta around 16 BC, it served as capital of the Roman province of Gallaecia. Today the city of roughly 200,000 people is best known for its concentration of Baroque churches — over 30 within the historic centre — anchored by the Sé de Braga, the oldest cathedral in Portugal, consecrated in 1089.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster within walking distance of the Praça da República and the pedestrianised Rua do Souto. The hilltop sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, 5 km east of the centre, draws pilgrims and tourists alike to its 17th-century zigzag staircase; several guesthouses operate in the surrounding woodland. The Baixa district offers the densest range of mid-range and boutique properties, minutes from the Arco da Porta Nova and the covered Mercado Municipal.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Porto's Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is 47 km south; direct trains run to Braga station in under an hour.
- Getting around: The historic centre is compact and walkable; taxis and ride-share apps cover the Bom Jesus ascent.
- When to visit: Holy Week (Semana Santa) in Braga is among the largest Easter processions in the Iberian Peninsula, drawing visitors from across Europe — book hotels several weeks ahead.
