About Guimarães

Guimarães: Portugal's Founding City

Guimarães earned the title Berço da Nação — cradle of the nation — as the birthplace of Afonso Henriques, who became Portugal's first king in 1139. The Castelo de Guimarães, a 10th-century hilltop fortress, stands as the country's most potent symbol of national origin. In 2001, UNESCO designated the historic centre a World Heritage Site, recognising its intact medieval urban fabric of granite arcades, cobblestone lanes, and manor houses concentrated around Praça de Santiago and Largo do Toural.

Where to Stay

Most hotels occupy converted historic buildings within the pedestrian old town, a short walk from the Paço dos Duques de Bragança (Palace of the Dukes of Braganza), a 15th-century ducal palace open daily to visitors. Mid-range guesthouses cluster along Rua de Santo António and in the Oliveira quarter. The Penha hill, 4 km east of the centre and reachable by cable car, offers quieter accommodation away from the festival crowds.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Guimarães sits 53 km northeast of Porto; direct trains from Porto Campanhã run roughly every hour and take about 1 hour 10 minutes.
  • Getting around: The historic centre is compact; most sights fall within a 15-minute walk of Praça de Santiago.
  • Timing: The Festas Gualterianas, held each August and documented since 1452, draws large crowds — book hotels several weeks in advance.
  • Climate: Minho winters are mild but wet; pack a waterproof layer between November and March.
