Pousada Mosteiro de Guimaraes

Twenty-two rooms occupy the medieval monastery of Santa Marinha da Costa, a 12th-century Augustinian foundation perched on the wooded slopes of Penha hill above Guimarães old town — the birthplace of Portugal itself.

The conversion preserves the cloister's granite arcades, azulejo panels, and carved stone details throughout public spaces. Rooms in the original structure retain vaulted ceilings; modern wing rooms trade atmosphere for larger bathrooms with full bathtubs. An outdoor pool and terrace face the valley below.

The UNESCO-listed historic centre is a ten-minute walk downhill, with the 10th-century castle and Paço dos Duques both reachable on foot. The restaurant serves regional Minho dishes alongside a wine list weighted toward Vinho Verde producers.
