About Porto

Stay in Ribeira for riverside access and traditional tascas steps from the Dom Luís I Bridge; Bonfim for independent wine bars and a local feel; Baixa for central shopping and transit links; or Foz do Douro for Atlantic-facing accommodation quieter than the centre. Most visitors stay three to four nights. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is 11 km from Ribeira — about 30 minutes by metro Line E.

Where to Stay in Porto

Ribeira, Porto's UNESCO-listed waterfront quarter, suits travellers who want medieval lanes, port-wine lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, and dinner at tables overlooking the Douro. Bonfim, east of Aliados, has become the city's creative neighbourhood — art studios, natural-wine shops, and a slower pace than the riverfront. Baixa anchors the commercial core around Rua de Santa Catarina and the Bolhão Market (reopened 2022 after full restoration), convenient for trams and the metro. Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic, offers beach walks along Avenida do Brasil and a residential calm.

Getting Around

Porto's Metro do Porto (6 lines) connects the airport, city centre, and Matosinhos in under 40 minutes. Historic trams 1, 18, and 22 run from Infante along the waterfront. The Dom Luís I Bridge upper deck is pedestrian-only and links Ribeira to the port lodges of Gaia on foot. Taxis and ride-shares cover gaps; the centre is compact enough to walk between most sights.

Practical Tips

  • Season: June–September is dry and warm (avg. 25 °C); November–February brings Atlantic rain — pack a waterproof layer.
  • Port wine: Lodge tours in Vila Nova de Gaia typically cost €12–20 and include tastings; book ahead in summer.
  • Bolhão Market: Open Monday–Saturday; arrive before noon for the widest selection of cheese, charcuterie, and local bread.
  • Day trips: Braga is 55 km north by train (under an hour); Douro Valley vineyards are 100 km east.
