About Aveiro

Aveiro: Canals, Salt Flats, and Art Nouveau on Portugal's Coast

Aveiro sits on the Atlantic coast of central Portugal, 75 km south of Porto, where the Ria de Aveiro lagoon cuts through a flat landscape of salt pans and pine forests. The city earned its nickname — the Venice of Portugal — from the painted moliceiro boats that still drift along the central canal, though the comparison understates Aveiro's own character. The Rossio district holds some of the finest Art Nouveau facades in Iberia, built during the early 20th century when seaweed trading brought prosperity to the region.

Where to Stay in Aveiro

Most hotels cluster within walking distance of the Canal Central, putting guests close to the covered market, the 15th-century Mosteiro de Jesus (now the city museum), and the train station, itself decorated with 1916 azulejo panels by Jorge Colaço. The Costa Nova beach strip, 10 km west, offers striped fishermen's houses and Atlantic surf. Day-trippers arrive from Porto in under an hour by Alfa Pendular train.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Frequent intercity trains connect Aveiro to Porto (around 1 hour) and Coimbra (40 minutes).
  • Getting around: The city centre is compact and walkable; rent a bicycle to reach the salt flats and lagoon paths.
  • Best time to visit: April through October offers dry weather; August draws domestic tourists to Costa Nova.
  • Local specialty: Ovos moles, a UNESCO-recognised confection of egg yolk and sugar sold in shell-shaped wafers throughout the historic centre.
