About Ljubljana

Ljubljana: Slovenia's Capital on the Ljubljanica River

Ljubljana, population roughly 295,000, has served as Slovenia's capital since the country gained independence in 1991. The old town clusters around Ljubljana Castle, a medieval fortress rising 376 metres above sea level on Castle Hill, reached by funicular in under two minutes. The Ljubljanica River bisects the centre, lined with triple-arched Tromostovje (Triple Bridge), designed by architect Jože Plečnik in 1932. Plečnik's imprint is everywhere — from the National and University Library to the covered Central Market along the riverbank.

Where to Stay in Ljubljana

Most hotels concentrate within walking distance of Prešeren Square, the city's main gathering point. The Krakovo and Trnovo districts, south of the centre, offer quieter guesthouses along canal-side streets. Business travellers target properties near BTC City, a commercial district 3 km east of the old town. The city hosts around 40 listed properties across budget hostels, boutique hotels, and four-star options.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport sits 26 km north of the centre; shuttle buses run every 30 minutes.
  • Getting around: The old town is largely pedestrianised; free city bikes are available at 36 stations.
  • Best season: April through October for outdoor café culture along the Ljubljanica embankment.
  • Day trips: Lake Bled lies 55 km northwest — direct buses run hourly from the main bus station.
