About Piran

Piran: Medieval Venetian Port on the Slovenian Adriatic

Piran sits at the tip of a narrow peninsula in the Gulf of Piran, 125 km southwest of Ljubljana. The town preserves one of the most complete Venetian Gothic ensembles on the eastern Adriatic — a legacy of nearly five centuries under the Republic of Venice (1283–1797). Tartinijev trg (Tartini Square), named after the baroque composer Giuseppe Tartini born here in 1692, anchors the seafront with its red 15th-century Venetian House and the neoclassical Town Hall.

Where to Stay

Accommodation clusters in two zones. The old town peninsula offers boutique guesthouses and apartments inside restored stone buildings within walking distance of the Cathedral of St. George, which stands 50 metres above the waterfront on a hilltop above the old harbour. The Portorož–Lucija strip, 3 km southeast along the coast, hosts larger hotels with private beach access and spa facilities. Portorož International Airport is 7 km away; the nearest train station is in Koper, 17 km north, with bus connections running roughly hourly.

Practical Tips

  • Parking: Cars are restricted in the old town; use the Fornače lot on the north edge and walk 10 minutes in.
  • Season: July and August bring the highest crowds; May and September offer mild weather with shorter queues at the town walls.
  • Currency: Slovenia uses the euro; most restaurants and hotels accept cards.
  • Day trips: Trieste (Italy) is 45 km by road; Poreč (Croatia) is reachable by seasonal catamaran.
