About Knysna

Knysna: Lagoon Town on the Garden Route

Knysna sits on a tidal lagoon along South Africa's Garden Route, roughly 500 km east of Cape Town. Two sandstone cliffs — the Knysna Heads — guard the lagoon mouth, creating one of the country's most photographed natural features. The surrounding Knysna Forest, part of the broader Garden Route National Park, shelters rare Knysna elephants and patches of ancient yellowwood trees.

Visitors arrive for watersports on the 17 km lagoon, hiking trails through the Featherbed Nature Reserve, and the town's well-known oyster farming industry. The Knysna Oyster Festival, held every July since 1983, draws tens of thousands of visitors annually. Thesen Islands, a converted timber harbour, concentrates restaurants and boutique accommodation within walking distance of the central waterfront.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: The nearest commercial airport is George Airport, 65 km west — allow 50 minutes by car on the N2.
  • Best time to visit: April to June offers mild temperatures and fewer crowds before the July festival peak.
  • Getting around: A car is essential; public transport within Knysna is limited to minibus taxis.
  • Weather: Pack a light layer year-round — the forest microclimate brings unexpected rain even in summer.
